Prague Zoo Day Trip

0
Giraffes at Prague Zoo

In Day 16 of our epic family travel adventure we took a half day trip Prague Zoo, one of the finest zoos in all of Europe. In fact, we checked trip advisor before going and found that it was the 6th best zoo in the world!

Just a few days earlier we had visited Vienna Zoo and we were extremely impressed, we wanted to see how Prague Zoo would compare.

How To Get To Prague Zoo

Prague Zoo is across the other side of the Voltava River from the city centre, and is seems a little tricky to get to. We checked on Google Maps and found that we had to catch 2 subway trains and a bus. It sounds tough right? Well think again.

The train system is extremely efficient in Prague. With our all day public transport ticket which costs 110 Czech Koruna (about $6 Australian), it’s quite cheap to zip all around the city. We never had to wait more than 3-4 minutes for a train.

And the bus system is also extremely easy to navigate, and we never waited more than 6-7 minutes for a bus. All up, it took half an hour to get to the zoo, and it was really easy with the help of Google Maps.

What’s So Good About Prague Zoo

One thing that struck us with this zoo was the cost. It’s cheap to get in at about 150 Czech Koruna. And the food prices throughout the zoo are quite reasonable also. Actually much cheaper than you would find in the tourist areas of Prague.

The zoo has countless cafes where you can purchase a decent meal. And there are vending machines literally everywhere where you can buy water, all sorts of hot and cold drinks, and light snacks. Don’t bother bringing your lunch to this zoo!

The zoo is along the banks of the Voltava river, which has a high, steep river bank along it. It’s a long way up and a seriously tough walk. about half of the zoo is at the bottom, and half at the top of the hill. I was not looking forward to climbing that hill.

Riding the Chair Lift

But then we discovered the chair lift which charges 25 CKZ to get to the top. Not only was it a lifesaver, it was seriously good fun! So much that we got on it again for a joy-ride later in the day. Another bonus – you will get outstanding views of the Voltava River and Prague city.

The zoo attractions were amazing. It doesn’t earn 6th best zoo for no reason. There was an amazingly large range of animal species. The spaces are huge for the animals. And the ranges of habitats is phenomenal. We spend about 6 hours in the park, and we needed another 2-3 hours to see everything. And we were literally racing around towards the end. This a full day zoo.

Is Prague Zoo better than Vienna Zoo?

And now for the million dollar question – is Prague Zoo better than Vienna Zoo? We can confidently answer this question, because we visited both just a few days apart from each other, in similar hot weather. We caught public transport to both and spent roughly 6 hours in both.

  • Cost – Prague is about 60% the cost for both entry and food, a clear winner.
  • Ease to get to – Prague wins out marginally here, because Vienna took us 1 hour compared to half hour for Prague.
  • Nearby attractions – Vienna was at the back of Schonbrunn Palace, Vienna’s number one attraction. Prague is fairly isolated for nearby attractions. Vienna wins here.
  • Variety of animals – Both zoos had excellent varieties, however Prague wins out slightly here.
  • Quality of enclosures – Prague has a few large open range type enclosures and is the clear winner here.
  • Crowds – Because Prague is so expansive it feels less crowded, and is the winner.

Overall, you can see that Prague Zoo is the best of the two zoos. It does deserve it’s ranking of the 6th best zoo in our opinion and is well worth the visit. Your kids will be talking about it for years to come, it really is a memorable day out. But it’s not just a zoo for kids. Whether alone, with partner, family or friends, do yourself a favour and allow a full day for the Prague Zoo.

Karlstejn Castle Tour from Prague

0
Walking towards Karlstejn Castle

Karlstejn Castle was founded in 1348 by King Charles IV, who was then the Bohemian King and Holy Roman Emperor. Construction finished in 1365, after that the castle was used to protect the Imperial Crown Jewels and other sacred holy relics.

Karlstejn castle dominates the skyline with a 60 metre high Great Tower, and is equipped with massive fortifications. This is a magnificent castle to visit, and it is less than an hour from the Czech capital, Prague!

Karlstejn Castle Half Day Tour

In Day 16 of our epic family travel adventure we took a half day tour to this imposing castle. For me it was the highlight of our European vacation as I love exploring authentic medieval castles. Check out our VLOG by clicking the below image.

Note: This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy for more information.

How To Get To Karlstejn Castle

The castle is easily accessible for anybody who has access to a car. But as tourists we had 2 options – catch the train or take a tour.

The train is very easy, just catch a regional train from Prague station to Karlstejn Station. They leave twice per hour and the journey takes just 40 minutes. Also the tickets are cheap, about 6 Euros when I researched. All the details can be easily found on the Czech Transport website here.

Walking through the town to reach the castle

We chose to book  half-day tour through the Get Your Guide website. Hence this was a very easy tour, we just had to show up at the nominated address in central Prague at 9:00 am. They drove us directly to Karlstejn Castle in a small luxury mini-van.

Once we got there, they had us already booked into a 50 minute English tour. That left us with about 1 hour to stroll around those parts of the castle accessible for free. In addition the cost of our tour was quite reasonable at 70 Euros for 2 people.

We booked our tour at 7am on the day of the tour, as a last minute decision. No complaints with the tour, it all went seamlessly.

Note: More information on this tour can be found by clicking the below link:

The Karlstejn Castle Tour

Karlstejn castle was just amazing and everything I had hoped for. Surprisingly there are none of these gothic style medieval castles to see in Prague. Because of that I particularly wanted to take the trip to Karlstejn Castle.

We learnt all about the King and his Castle, thanks to our very informative tour guide. The furniture inside was fairly sparse but very authentic. We even got to see the original throne room complete with throne, as well as the King’s original bedroom suite.

Karlstejn Castle Dining Room
Typical interior inside the castle

The internal tour group was quite large, probably about 30 or so people. The rooms were all quite huge meaning that the tour was able to cope with this amount of people quite comfortably.

We probably went through about 10 rooms all up, so we had quite a good look around the castle. However we did not get to enter the Grand Tower or the Cathedral, these are off-limits for normal tour groups.

Was This Tour Worth The Effort?

It is no secret that Germany is the place to see lots of awesome medieval castles, however if you are visiting Prague I definitely recommend a visit to Karlstejn Castle. It is certainly very authentic and in a beautiful setting.

Finally the tour we booked was a great no-fuss way to see the castle, and takes a mere 5 minutes to book it online or on the Get Your Guide app on your phone. Therefore if you have a spare half day in Prague, it’s definitely worth the trip to Karlstejn Castle.

Try Something Different

By all means if you’d like to check out some different tour options to Karlstejn Castle, have a look at all the different tours available on GetYourGuide.com. We love using this tour platform, and especially their free iPhone app.

Prague Self Guided Foot Tour

0
Seeing the astronomical Clock on the prague Self Guided Foot Tour

In Day 15 of our epic family travel adventure we tour around the beautiful romantic city of Prague on foot. We were tempted to pay for a hop-on hop-off style bus tour. But we had done these in Budapest and Vienna and wanted to try something different.

Prague Self Guided Foot Tour

This time we chose to do our own foot tour, with some public transport thrown in to cover some of the longer distances.

We just love seeing Unesco World Heritage sites, and with a bit or research we learned of 2 in central Prague. And at the top of ou list was the historic old city centre. Second is Prague Castle. So our main strategy was to see both of these sites on our foot tour, and see what other sites could attract our attention along the way.

The Old Town Square in Prague

Our first stop was to see the famous Astronomical Clock. This is a special clock with dials and mechanisms to show astronomical information such as positions of the sun, moon, constellations and planets. It’s the third oldest astronomical clock in the world, and the oldest one still operating.

It was built way back in the 15th century! Every hour there is a show, when a skeleton as the figure of death strikes the bell. Above this scary figure is a procession of the apostles and other figurines. We were lucky enough to see this show at 12:00, so we saw the maximum number of chimes.

The great thing about the Astronomical Clock is that it is located in the Prague Old Town Square. This is the World Heritage site we were wanting to see. We strolled around here for a while, taking in the old gothic and Baroque architecture of the medieval churches.

This square dates back to the 14th centre and still shows its medieval nature. We were also entertained by many street performers and some magnificent old statues.

Getting Lost in Prague

After the town square we decided to get lost in Prague, just by wandering around looking for interesting buildings. And there were many, including some beautiful old churches. Prague is truly a photographer’s dream when it comes to photographing gothic, Baroque and Bohemian architecture.

With the help of Google maps we were able to get lost and found again, whilst marvelling at many wonderful examples of Czech architecture.

Prague Castle

Later that day we took the trip to Prague Castle, yet another Unesco World Heritage site. This was a funny experience, as we had learnt that this dates back to the 8th centre. We were expecting an old medieval castle with stone walls. We actually walked right through the castle without realising it.

Only after we looked for the castle on Google Maps did we realise we’d already walked through it! We went back for another look and discovered a huge, ornate castle, reminiscent of the palaces we had seen in Hungary and Austria.

Vienna to Prague by Bus

0
Arriving in Prague Czech Republic

In Day 14 of our epic family travel adventure we travel from Vienna to Prague. Our chosen transport for our trip was aboard a bus – on the RegioJet bus lines. This turned out the be a cheaper and easier option than train or plane.

Vienna Bus Station to Travel to Prague

The bus station was only about 7 minutes walk from our hotel which was very convenient, considering we were travelling fairly light. Finding the right bus and boarding our bus turned out to be very easy.

The Journey to Prague

The bus was not as comfortable as we had hoped. The seats were fairly cramped and not altogether comfortable. There weren’t any stretch breaks along the way, or toilet stops. The bus was 100% full for the entire journey. It really was a “cattle class” bus trip. This wasn’t really a problem, especially since the total cost for the 4.5 hour journey was only 45 Euros for the three of us!

I guess our hopes were a bit high, since our previous bus-trip was from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. It was like flying in first class, and luxurious all the way. You can read about that trip here.

Arrival in Prague

When we arrived in Prague we had about a 10 minute walk to our new home. Once again it was quite uneventful, and it was great to see the buildings of Prague at long last. Checking into the hotel, it was time to do some laundry at the local laundromat.

I had researched 3 laundromats on Google Maps. The first one was a dud, it was a dry cleaner place which wanted to charge $3 per tee-shirt. I instead made a half hour walk to a regular laundromat and managed to wash and dry a load of washing for about $15 in total.

It was a lovely walk, especially as on the twilight walk back to the hotel I had a great view of Prague Castle. This is the largest castle in the world! World Heritage listed, it was built in the 8th century. We are really looking forward to touring this amazing site, but for now it was good just to get a view of it.

Time to rest up for some exploring tomorrow of the amazing city of Prague. Like Vienna, the entire city centre is listed as a World Heritage site. Can’t wait to explore it!

Vienna Big Bus Tour – Hop On / Hop Off Bus

Vienna Big Bus Tour

In Day 13 of our epic family travel adventure we get back onto the Vienna Big Bus Tour around the city areas. We complete full loops of both the red route and the blue route. Along the way we listened to the full guided tour, which was a fantastic account of Vienna’s colourful history. This is a beautiful city with an amazing history, wonderfully described on the Big Bus Tours.

History Lessons on Vienna Big Bus Tour

We learnt how some of history’s most important people lived in this city. We saw Schonbrunn Palace where Napoleon Bonaparte  stayed and his son lived. Also at Schonbrunn Marie Antoinette lived in the west wing, and Adolf Hitler used to stroll around and paint pictures.

We saw the school of fine arts where Adolf Hitler was refused entry on several occasions, and the hotel where he once worked as a maintenance man. We saw houses where Strauss, Mozart and Sigmund Freud lived. And many more.

This is an amazing city with an amazing history, and we were privileged to get a first hand account.

Vienna Video Part 1

Vienna Video Part 2

Vienna Military Museum

Our highlight on this day was the History Military Museum. This is a remarkable museum, and we were excited to see the tank garden which is home to many restored German tanks. The entry was only 8 Euros for two of us. We explored the WW1 and WW2 sections.

It was amazingly eerie to see the war memorabilia from the Nazi perspective as most of the displays were German. We went through the excellent naval exhibit, then upstairs to the historic / medieval section. This was an amazing display of medieval weapons and armory, as well as many battle scene paintings dating back many centuries.

It is well worth seeing the military museum for the beautiful building alone. But with the cheap entry and the astounding displays this museum offers extraordinary value. The only downside – the tank garden was blocked off for renovations. We did ‘sneak’ around the back for a peak through the fence, so we didn’t miss out completely.

Other Attractions in Vienna

We went on to see many other attractions on thisVienna Big Bus Tour such as:

  • Belvedere Palace – yet another amazing palace and garden
  • The Swiss embassy – a building dating back some 500 years
  • St.Charles Church – yet another amazing church
  • The Museums Quartier – home to many amazing buildings and statues
  • Haus of Music – a 7 level museum of music
  • Flak Towers on the outskirts of the city – built by the Nazi’s to defend Vienna and still standing
  • Many other historic buildings

Vienna Self Guided Walking Tour

See the Albertina on Vienna Self Guided Walking Tour

In Day 12 of our epic family adventure we do some sightseeing around the historic city centre of Vienna, Austria. Today we get back on the Big Bus Tour and head to the city centre for some sight-seeing of the main landmarks. The entire city centre is listed as a Unesco World Heritage site so it’s bound to be a special tour.

Landmarks to See on Vienna Walking Tour

Using the Big Bus Tours guide map, we start visiting some of the landmarks on the map. These included:

  • Strauss Monument / Stadtpark
  • Mozart Haus
  • St.Stephen’s Cathedral / Stephansom
  • Graben
  • Albertina
  • Opera House

Albertina Gallery

The highlight of our day was entry into the Albertina Gallery. This is our third art gallery for the holiday, the first 2 were in London and Budapest. The Albertina is special because it has a large collection of Picasso paintings, as well as some Claude Monet paintings. These alone were well worth the visit. We also got to see a genuine Michelangelo painting.

Wandering through the Albertina we also discovered a section of the gallery dedicated to preserving some to the classic Viennese imperial style. These rooms were exquisitely decorated to royal standards. In fact royalty did live here for some time, 2 or 3 centuries ago. We stood in the room where the military chief died in years gone by. Unfortunately we were informed that no video photography is permitted in these sections.

Vienna City Central

The old city of Vienna is remarkably well-preserved and well worth visiting. Every corner we turned there was a new amazing sight to take in. The dining options were spectacular. The shopping experiences extraordinary. The old city centre of Vienna is spectacular in every way, and well worth visiting. All you need is a guide map to find the best landmarks.

Vienna Schonbrunn Palace and Zoo

0
Vienna Schönbrunn Palace and Zoo

In Day 11 or our epic family adventure we do some sightseeing around the legendary city of Vienna, Austria. Today we head to Schonbrunn Palace, which is perhaps the number one attraction in Vienna. Here we learn about the history, splendor and imperial lifestyle of Vienna.

Schonbrunn Palace is a former imperial summer residence located in Vienna. It has 1,441 rooms and is one of the most important architectural, cultural and historical monuments in Austria. So much so that it is Unesco World Heritage listed.

Catching Vienna Subway to Schonbrunn Zoo

On the way we experience the Vienna subway, taking 2 trains from out hotel to the Schonbrunn station. The trip was fairly economical at a cost of 15 Euros for 2 x 24 hour passes. I was a bit concerned using the vending machines to purchase our tickets, due to the language issues. As it turned out they were simple to use, and the subway system easy to navigate.

Schonbrunn Zoo

Our first stop entering Schonbrunn Palace was to visit the Schonbrunn Zoo. We arrived at 12:00 lunchtime and figured that we’ll have a 3-4 hour stroll around the zoo and then do a palace tour. As it turned out the zoo was very big and interesting. It took us 6.5 hours to get around the zoo and see all the exhibits.

Clarc did a great job of navigating our way around the labyrinth of trails, ensuring we didn’t miss anything. However we did miss out on a palace tour. Instead we spend our last hour at Schonbrunn exploring the gardens.

Schonbrunn Gardens

Behind Schonbrunn Palace is a massive expanse of gardens and other attractions. There is a massive sun fountain at the base of a hill. A walk up to the top of the hill takes you to a massive monument called Gloriette with a cafe / restaurant.

You are also treated to brilliant views of Vienna, Schonbrunn Palace and its expansive gardens on a viewing deck.

The Schonbrunn Complex

We underestimated the extent of this massive complex. We went to the Zoo and explored a part of the gardens. However there are so many other attractions in the palace ground that we would love to have seen. There is a maze, many garden and forest walks, Mozart concerts, Roman ruins, botanical gardens and many more.

The list is long of things to see at Schonbrunn Palace, such that it really requires 2 days to see the majority of it. It is a stunning attraction and well worth seeing as much as you can. It is definitely and experience I’ll never forget!

Budapest to Vienna by Train

0
Budapest to Vienna Train

In Day 10 or our epic family adventure we make the journey from Budapest to Vienna aboard the international train. This was our first international train so it was kind of exciting!

Getting through Kelesi Station Budapest

The details of getting through this train were challenging to say the least. Here are the basic steps we had to follow:

  1. Pre-book the tickets online at the MAV website.
  2. Download a pre-ticket reservation form with our reservation number.
  3. Go to the station and punch in the reservation number to get the ticket from the vending machine.
  4. Wait until 20 minutes before the train to get the platform number.
  5. Ask the guard attendant which carriage we’re on, there’s no legible (English) info on the ticket.
  6. Pass through the passport checkpoint at the border.
  7. Uber to the Vienna hotel.

Not that difficult all in all, but we had to be careful not to mess up any of the steps. It’s not like a simple train trip back home that’s for sure!

Budapest Royal Palace

0
View from Budapest Grand Palace

In Day 9 or our epic family adventure we continue exploring Budapest Hungary. This time we focus on the opposite side of the Danube River, and explore the Royal Palace.

We were still using the Budapest Big Bus Tours to get around and explore this wonderful city. Later on we go onto discover the city by night aboard the Night Cruise.

So Much to See at Budapest Royal Palace

This was such a big day that we had to break it up into two you-tube VLOG’s. These were 100% recorded and edited on my iPhone, to test out how good these amazing gadgets are. I was happy with the results, which show a dramatic improvement on the audio quality compared to the go-pro.

The Other Side of the Danube River

Whilst exploring the ‘other side’ of the Danube River, we found stacks of other great attractions. These included:

  • Castle Garden
  • Royal Palace
  • National Art Gallery
  • Funicular
  • Matthias Church
  • St. Anna Church
  • Batthayany Church

It was a strenuous day with lots of stairs and lots of climbing. We ended it at Anna’s Cafe with some awesome caramel sundae and chocolate milkshakes.

Night Cruise Along the Danube River

After our day of exploring we finished of with a 9:30pm night cruise along the Danube River. We went on the Silverline Cruise, which is included in the price of the Big Bus Tours. It’s very good value all in all.

The night cruise was fantastic and well worth the effort. The boat was slow and steady which allowed for some good long exposure night photography and we got plenty of great photos. The only thing missing was a jacket, as it was a chilly 14 degrees.

Overall Impressions of Budapest

We were so glad that we explored the Royal Palace and Matthias’s Church. We didn’t enter the church as the entry fee was quite high. There were quite a few other entry charges along the way, which we avoided except of the National Art Gallery.

It could be quite and expensive day if you included all of these. They’re probably better left for a package tour where entry is included. Overall we saw a lot in our brief 2 day stop in Budapest. Now it’s time to move onto another country for some more tours.

Budapest Big Bus Tour – Hop On / Hop Of

0
Budapest Big Bus Tour Parliament House

In Day 8 of our epic Family Travel Adventure we explore Budapest aboard a Big Bus Tour. We enjoyed our London Big Bus Tour so much and found it to be such good value that we did it again in Budapest.

We discovered there are 2 main routes – red and blue. The style of the tour is the same as in London, it is hop on hop off as many times as you like. There is also a river cruise along the Danube River, which can be used as many times as you like.

We got the premium tickets which allowed us 2 days of travel, a night bus tour, and a night river cruise.

Budapest Big Bus Tour – Blue Route

The main attractions along the blue route are as follows:

  • Chain Bridge
  • Royal Palace
  • St Anna Church
  • Batthyany Square
  • Margaret (Golden) Bridge
  • Margaret Island
  • Nyugati Square
  • St.Stephen’s Basillica
  • Elizabeth Square
  • Downtown shopping district
  • Great synagogue
  • River Cruise departure point
  • Elizabeth Bridge
  • Castle Garden

Our main strategy for day 1 was to do the full lap on the blue bus, listen to the recorded guided tour, and to take a river cruise. Later we would return for the 9pm night bus tour.

Sampling Some Hungarian Sausages

We also found time to explore the shopping district downtown, and to sample some of the famous Hungarian cuisine. I went for the Hungarian Sausage with sauerkraut, Clarice went for the Hungarian Goulash, and Clarc went for Pizza. I guess he’s not quite up to Hungarian experiments yet. Our Hungarian exploration turned out to be hot, spicy, delicious and filling. And exploring the labyrinth of narrow streets was overall fascinating

Danube River Cruise

The cruise along the Danube River was wonderful. There are cruises about every 1.5 hours, and each cruse takes approx. 70 minutes. You cruise from Elizabeth Bridge, up past the Royal Palace and Matthias Church. Then under the Golden Bridge and up to Margaret island, where you have the option to disembark and walk around the island. Then the boat turns around and you cruise past the Hungarian Parliament building and back to the departure point.

Budapest Night Tour on the Big Bus Tour

The night bus tour was a bit of a let-down in my opinion. Sure there were plenty of beautiful sights to take in at night, however our bus-driver barely stopped at any of them. Instead we just drove straight past them.

Being a photographer I like to take long exposure shots on my DSLR camera. To do this you really need a tripod to keep absolutely still. however you can get away with a very steady hand. But on this bus tour the bus didn’t stop, so it was virtually impossible to get any good long exposure night photos. The night cruise is probably the better option to get a good look at Budapest by night.

Overall Impressions of Budapest

Budapest impressed us as a fascinating city with a rich history of Ottoman, Soviet and independent history. The massive buildings throughout the city are quite breathtaking, and one could spend days exploring the interior of these buildings.

Unfortunately for us we were limited with time, and only got to see the outsides. The shopping and dining wasn’t as cheap as we thought it might be, but it was not exactly expensive either. Being peak season in summer the el fresco dining options are seemingly endless. We’re glad we visited Budapest, and can’t wait to see more tomorrow!
