How to Catch a Bus From Fira to Oia Santorini

0
fira to oia bus

Santorini island is bigger than you think, and getting around Santorini can be quite a costly experience. Yes, Santorini can be very expensive. Thankfully there is a inexpensive option available, the Santorini bus system. Here is how to catch a bus from Fira to Oia.

Note: This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy for more information.

How to Get Around Santorini

Public Bus

The Santorini bus is awesome, and the best way to get around Santorini in our opinion. They only cost around 2 Euros per trip, and the routes reach many popular destinations all over the island. This is the best way to go if you have some time on your hands. Keep in mind they can be exteremly crowded in high season, when peak hour seems to be all day.

Hire Car

A car is a great way to go when exploring Santorini, and you can even pick one up at the airport when you arrive. The only catch is that you will require a valid drivers license – International or Greek.

Depending on where you stay, finding your hotel and finding a car park near the hotel may be an extremely frustrating experience. There are not many cars on Santorini and it’s not a good terrain to park a car. And you will most likely require a personal guide just to find your hotel, let alone to assist with carrying your suitcases down the steep stairs.

Although a car is many times more expensive than catching a public bus, it offers a lot more freedom and is considerably faster than catching a bus. Keep in mind that parking will be a big problem, particularly if you are staying in one of the more popular areas along the caldera cliff.

Taxi

You can get a taxi in Santorini virtually anytime anywhere just by dialling +30 22860 22555. Alternatively, I am sure your hotel would be happy to assist with booking a taxi. The catch is you will be paying 20-30 Euros for the average taxi fare, so it can get very expensive very quickly. It’s probably not too bad if you have 4 people sharing the taxi fare.

Rent a Quad Bike

Let me start by saying that Quad Bikes scare the living daylights out of me. Even if you are familiar with riding motorcycles, quad bikes can be very difficult and are very dangerous. But they are lots of fun.

You see lots of quad bikes on the open road all over Santorini, and they are quite easy to hire. As you walk around you will see many places to hire a quad bike, and your hotel should be able to help out also.

Santorini Tours

If you are only planning to get out and about for one day, then a guided tour may be a good option. Santorini Tours generally cost around 250 Euros for a half day tour, and they can take you anywhere you wish to go on the island. Obviously more people in the car is a good idea to reduce costs.

Why Use the Public Buses

If you are anything like us, you will have splashed out an astronomical amount on your Santorini Accommodation. Why not, it may be a once in a lifetime opportunity in this idyllic location. Consequently, you may be looking for ways to save money to make up for the excessive accommodation costs. Buses can certainly help you to save money.

The main and largest town of Santorini is Fira (a.k.a. Thira). This is also the major bus hub, with buses starting from Fira to go to different points on Santorini Island. The most popular bus route is Fira to Oia. This is the route we took to photograph the famous blue domes in Oia.

You can also go from Fira to 3 of the most popular Santorini beaches (Kamari, Perissa, Akrotiri), the port, or the town of Pyrgos. The bus is also the cheapest option to get from Santorini airport to Fira.

Getting off the bus at Oia Bus Station

How to Catch the Bus From Fira to Oia

The first thing you should do is access the bus timetable, which you can download on the Santorini Public Buses Website. Generally they run every 20 minutes or so.

Next you will want to go to the Fira bus station, which is the main bus hub for the whole island. It’s quite easy to find the main Fira bus station, just ask anyone and they will point you in the right direction. It’s only 2-3 minutes walk from the main town centre.

When you catch a Santorini bus, make sure you have some loose change (Euros). You don’t pay as you get onto the bus. Instead, a conductor will make his way through the bus whilst it is travelling to collect cash from passengers. After taking your fare the conductor will issue you with a ticket. That’s why you need to have the money ready to pay the fare. It’s normally around 2 Euros, but may be slightly more or less depending on the route you choose to take.

The Journey to Oia

The journey on the Fira to Oia bus is incredibly scenic, taking the road across the top of the mountain. You are treated to breathtaking views of Santorini beaches, coastline, and surrounding countryside for most of the journey, so it pays to have a window seat and a camera.

On the other hand, if you are afraid of mountainous winding roads, perhaps you had better sit closer to the middle aisle so you don’t have to peer out over step mountainous cliffs.

Discounts

The bus company website lists the following discounts available:

  • Half price for people having any kind of disability
  • Half price for people having many children
  • 25% reduction for students

Catching Oia to Fira Bus

Travelling from Oia to Fira is much the same as catching the bus from Fira to Oia. The only difference is that you need to know the location of the Oia bus station. Once again it is quite easy to find, just 3-4 minutes walk directly down the hill from the main town square. Here is a map to assist you.

Catching a Santorini Sunset Bus

Buses generally run up until around midnight, so they’re a great idea to find the perfect location to see the perfect sunset.

We think it’s a perfect option to catch a Santorini Bus from Fira to Oia. Sure they can get a little crowded, but if you overlook this slight inconvenience then the public bus can be a wonderful addition to your Santorini holiday.

How to Photograph the Santorini Blue Domes

0
Santorini Blue Domes

Anyone who opens Instagram will have seen photos of the 3 blue domed churches on the Greek Island of Santorini. This is the quintessential postcard picture of the Greek Islands. If you’re planning to visit Santorini we’ll show you exactly how to photograph the Santorini Blue Domes in Oia.

Note: This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy for more information.

Watch the Video for Directions

The most effective way we can show you how to find the blue domes in Santorini is to show you a step by step video. All you need to do is find the main Town Square in Oia as a starting point. It’s directly up the hill from the main bus station, and on the rim of the caldera. Watch the video and all will be revealed.

Why You Should Watch the Video

Santorini is a very hot place in the summer. Every single day is hot and sunny. And the towns consist of brilliant white painted buildings in every direction, so you will be dazzled by the reflected sunlight off the buildings.

And if try to find the domes without doing your research properly, then you will probably require 1-2 hours of walking along a labyrinth of tiny alleys and pathways looking for your perfect photo locations.

Oia is extremely hilly. Your walking will be mostly up and down steep hills, as well as steep staircases. It’s hot, sweaty and thirsty work. But it doesn’t have to be, there is an easier way.

If you know where to go in Santorini to take these memorable photos, it will take you less than 5 minutes to find the best spots to get your jaw-dropping photos of those blue domes. You will be the pride of your Instagram feed. Just follow our video for simple directions to the blue domes.

The Best Photos of the Blue Domes

There are 3 prime photo sites to snap the Santorini Blue Domes. These spots also offer some of the best views in Santorini to take in stunning views of the caldera and surrounding islands.

Postcard Spot 1

  • From the Bus Station in Oia, walk up the hill to the main town square of Oia. There is a large white church on one side of the town square, and the rim of the caldera on the other with spectacular ocean views.
  • Turn right from the town square along the yellow path, which is the main “road” in Oia. It is only about 2m wide.
  • Walk for about 50 to 100m along the yellow path until you reach a creamy colored blue domed church on the left. However it’s not the blue domed church we are searching for to photograph.
  • Turn left immediately after the creamy colored church, at the corner of Alexandros Jewelery. Walk down this path for about 50m and you will find Blue Dome Photo Spot Number 1.

Postcard Spot 2

  • Go back to the same yellow path, and continue away from the Oia town square.
  • Walk about 15-20m until you come to an orange colored Terpsi Cafe.
  • Turn left down the pathway to find a classic photo spot, just below the Terpsi Cafe.

Postcard Spot 3

  • Go back to the same yellow path, and continue away from the Oia town square.
  • Continue for about 20 meters until you get to the Minerali Souvenir Shop.
  • Turn left down the pathway and walk for about 20 meters.
  • You will find a spot to stand next to a 5foot high fence.
  • Peek over the top of the concrete fence for your picture postcard photo.

What Else to See in Oia:

There are some great sights in Oia, but one which is not to be missed is the lookout above the Byzantine Castle Ruins. Here you have amazing 270-degree views of the blue domes on one side, the Byzantine Castle Ruins on the other. And in the distance, you will see those amazing windmills which Santorini is famous for.

Incidentally, this is probably the best place to catch a stunning Oia sunset for some more insta-worthy snaps. You might have to get there early for a good spot, the secret is well and truly out.

The Best Views in Santorini

So you have found the best views and the famous blue domed churches in Santorini. Photographing these amazing churches and castles are the top things to do in Santorini because most people identify those famous domes as the symbol of Santorini.

If you only have one day in Santorini then I strongly recommend you head to Oia to see these famous domes. If you have longer then stick around for a stunning Oia sunset. I guarantee you will never forget this.

11 Reasons Why iPhone X is the Best Vlogging Camera

0
IPHONE X VLOGGING CAMERA

So you want to record a vlog but can’t decide which camera to use? I’ve done a side-by-side comparison of 3 popular vlogging cameras – iPhone X, DJI Osmo+ and GoPro HERO5 Black to determine which is the best vlogging camera. The results may surprise you.

First, check out my short video showing the comparisons between these three amazing video cameras.

Why is the iPhone X So Awesome?

As you can see on this comparison chart of iPhone Cameras, the iPhone X actually uses the same camera as its successors the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. About the only difference, you will find is slightly better optical image stabilization on the iPhone XS Max.

So iPhone X vs XS is a close battle indeed when it comes to video camera capabilities. Note that the iPhone X does not record in stereo audio, whilst the iPhone XS does. Not what I’d call a show stopper for the iPhone X.

Comparing the iPhone 8 vs iPhone X, the iPhone 8 only has a single wide-angle camera and no telephoto camera. So the iPhone X is far superior in the video camera department, with better zoom capabilities. Note the iPhone 8 Plus does have the telephoto lens, but the camera is obviously a lot bigger in size.

What is a VLOG?

A VLOG is a video blog or a blog with a video attached. Generally, there are 3 types of vlogs:

  1. Action – Videoing some sort of action like a holiday activity.
  2. How To – Documenting how to do something specific, like how to use a camera.
  3. Talking Head – Videoing yourself talking about a topic.

Equipment Required for Vlogging

Camera

Duh. A camera is the one item you cannot do without when creating a vlog. Thankfully the iPhone X has 2 great video cameras built in. Actually, 3 if you count the front camera, which is not too shabby at 7MP.

Microphone

Whilst the iPhone X internal microphone is sufficient for recording reasonable vlogs if you’re serious about making quality vlogs you need to invest in an external microphone. This will take you to professional quality in one swift move, it’s just a matter of connecting this bad-boy to the iPhone X.

The best external microphone currently on the market for the iPhone X is the Shure MV88, which plug right into the lightning port of the iPhone X.

Stabilization

Video Cameras normally come with inbuilt stabilization features, and the iPhone X is no exception. The iPhone X stabilization is awesome compared to previous iPhones and is awesome enough to produce great quality vlogs.

Still, the iPhone X stabilization is far from perfect. And that is where your editing software comes in. Professional software like iMovie and Final Cut Pro X have amazing stabilization capabilities, which can transform iPhone X video into a perfectly stable video. The downside is that the software generally zooms in to enable proper stabilization, so you lose some video around the edges of the frame.

If you want to take it to the next level and produce truly professional video then you can’t go wrong with hand-held gimbal stabilization. The best on the market for the iPhone X is the DJI Osmo Mobile 2.  This will help you achieve sensationally smooth cinematic style video.

The downside is that iPhone X has no 3.5mm microphone jack, thus if using a gimbal like the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 you will not be able to use an awesome external microphone like the Shure MV88.

Video Editing Software

This is required to make your raw video footage polished enough to present on YouTube. Generally, I recommend iMovie, which is free with your iPhone / iMac and can do all the basic functions to produce a quality vlog.

If you want to invest some serious money into your vlogging and get the full professional video editing software, you can’t go past Final Cut Pro X. This is the software I use, and there is literally nothing you can’t do.

iPhone X Video Results

Color Grading

The color is sensational on the iPhone X, it really pops. It is far superior to the GoPro Hero 5 Black in artificial lighting and comparable to the DJI Osmo+.

Good for Indoor Conditions

The iPhone X shoots superbly in artificial lighting, as can be seen in the foyer of the Conrad Hotel. Previous iPhones performed fairly poorly in dimly lit conditions, however, there has been a stellar jump in quality with the iPhone X.

Image Stabilisation

Once again the image stabilization is vastly improved over previous iPhones, however, it is still little jittery. Especially when compared to gimbal stabilized cameras such as the DJI Osmo+. The iPhone X performs well in panning at 30 fps.

Back Lighting

The iPhone X does struggle with strong lighting behind the subject, as do most cameras. You end up with an overexposed background, however, it does a great job with applying correct compensated exposure to the ‘talking head’ in the foreground.

Comparing iPhone X / DJI Osmo+ / GoPro HERO5 Black

The Go-Pro is my least preferred camera for vlogging. The color grading is very washed out in low light conditions and requires high levels of saturation in the video editing software. Also, the sound is terrible through the GoPro HERO5 Black internal microphones. Also, it is not easy to adapt external microphones to the GoPro HERO5 Black to correct the sound.

The DJI Osmo+ is awesome. This is a high-end (albeit still relatively cheap) 4K video camera. It has an external microphone supplied with the camera which produces excellent professional quality audio. This DJI Osmo+ is hard to rival, it’s the best video camera I’ve had the pleasure of using.

The iPhone X is overall far superior to the GoPro in both video and audio quality. The iPhone X comes close to the DJI Osmo+, however, the DJI camera is still slightly better quality. I believe it is possible to make the iPhone X as good or better quality than the DJI Osmo+ with the addition of hand-held gimbal stabilization and external microphone, for the camera itself is just as good if not better than the DJI Osmo+.

11 Reasons Why iPhone X is the Best Vlogging Camera

1: Easy Access 24/7

You have your iPhone X in your pocket or next to you 24/7 right?

2. Fast Set-up Time

You can quickly whip out your iPhone X and begin filming professional video in the blink of an eye. Other cameras like the DJI Osmo+ require some setup time to make them operational.

3. No Additional Equipment

You can shoot with no additional equipment. You don’t absolutely need a gimbal or external microphone, you’ll do just fine with a naked iPhone X.

4. Easy Upgrade to Pro Audio Quality

You can easily do a minor upgrade to enhance the sound. Adding a Shure MV88 external microphone will give you pro audio quality.

5, Easy Upgrade to Pro Video Quality

You can upgrade to enhance stabilization simply by adding a DJI Osmo Mobile 2. In an instant, you will have pro image stabilization.

6. Sensational Color

The video camera is sensational in the iPhone X, much better than most of its rivals. The colors really pop and easily compete with other popular video cameras.

7. Easy IOS Settings

The IOS settings are so easy to figure out. Forget complicated menus and settings, you have one single menu which is child’s play to figure out.

iPhone X best vlogging camera
iPhone X camera menus

8. Phenomenal Slo-Mo

You can slow down 4k with 60 fps to produce a stunning slo-mo video. Or you can use 1080p resolution at an incredible 240 fps!

9. Efficient File Storage Using the New HEVC Format

The file sizes are drastically reduced using the new High-Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC) file format. This will save you a ton of space on your hard drive.

10. Great Optical Zoom

GoPros and older iPhones are so frustrating in that they don’t have optical zoom. Problem solved with the iPhone X. Just tap the screen and you instantly get 2 x Optical Zoom.

11. Phenomenal Specifications:

Check these specs out from the Apple website

  • 4K video recording at 24 fps, 30 fps, or 60 fps
  • 1080p HD video recording at 30 fps or 60 fps
  • Optical image stabilization for video
  • Optical zoom; 6x digital zoom
  • Slo‑mo video support for 1080p at 120 fps or 240 fps
  • Time‑lapse video with stabilization
  • Cinematic video stabilization (1080p and 720p)
  • Continuous autofocus video
  • Body and face detection
  • Noise reduction
  • Take 8MP still photos while recording 4K video
  • Video geotagging

Need More Convincing?

Check out this awesome footage shot on the iPhone X.

So there you have it. iPhone X truly is the best vlogging camera. But don’t take my word for it. Go out and see for your self. You too can take amazing video using your iPhone X.

Quick Travel Guide to Bohol, Philippines

0
quick travel guide to Bohol

Bohol is the 10th largest island in the Philippines, and one of the premier tourist destinations. It is loaded with stunning white sandy beaches, lush tropical jungles, and adventure attractions, so it’s easy to see why Bohol is becoming so popular. Before your Bohol trip check out this Quick Travel Guide to Bohol Philippines.

Note: This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy for more information.

What To Do in Bohol Philippines

Bohol has a distinct advantage because it is so loaded with natural beauty. Because it is still a developing tourist destination, there are new attractions being created every year, and it is well known as a destination for thrill seekers.

Chocolate Hills

This is the most popular of all Bohol attractions, a peculiar geological formation of over 1,700 hills which look like a box of chocolates. No kidding! Normally these hills are green, but in the dry season they turn chocolate brown and take on the appearance of a box of your favorite chocolates.

If you ask any Filipino if they’ve been to Bohol they will invariably say ‘ah yes, chocolate hills’. The chocolate hills are the symbol of Bohol and the one attraction which is not to be missed.

Alona Beach

This is the most popular of all beaches in Panglao Island, the most popular Bohol tourist destination. Alona Beach is a long white sandy beach, lined with cafes, resorts, and SCUBA dive shops. And it’s a great place to take the kids for a safe swim.

Tarsiers

A tarsier is a small primate which measures only 3 to 6 inches long, making it the tiniest primate in the world. They are an endangered species due to the destruction of their forest habitat. Tarsiers are only found on this island, making them one of the most popular Bohol tourist attractions.

Luckily for tourists, there are some tarsier sanctuaries where you can see these cute little fellows. You should visit the Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary in Corella. Here you can see tarsiers in a cage, or walk along the Tarsier Trail to see them in their natural habitat.

Anda

Anda is a small town with stunning white beaches, about 2 hours drive from the capital city of Tagbilaran City. Anda is not so well developed, and you can still find bungalow style absolute beachfront accommodation. It’s the best place to visit in Bohol for a few days if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas.

Loboc River

About 40 minutes drive from the capital Tagbilaran City is the Loboc River. This is the biggest river on the island of Bohol and has lots of different river tour options available. One of the most interesting activities is firefly spotting at night. Stand up paddle boarding along the river is also popular.

Other Bohol Activities

Here are a few more interesting Bohol tourist spots you can visit:

Day Trips from Bohol

With a well-developed tourist industry, there are loads of options for Bohol travel and tours. You can actually drive all the way around the island of Bohol in a single day. Here are some of the more interesting tours that actually leave the island.

Cebu City

Tagbilaran City in Bohol is serviced by many ferry operators, also known as a fast craft. The most popular destination is Cebu City, just 2 hours away by fast craft. Cebu City is the second largest city in the Philippines, home to around one million people. Cebu City is well known for its great shopping, with some very large shopping malls.

Scuba Diving

Balicasag Island is just a few minutes boat ride from Alona Beach. Balicasag is the best SCUBA diving Bohol has to offer. Being a marine sanctuary it is full of huge turtles and diverse marine life. It is also quite shallow, with most dives around the 18m mark.

Swim With Whale Sharks at Oslob

It’s a very big day, but it is possible to travel all the way to Oslob on the northern tip of Cebu Island for a day trip. Many of the SCUBA dive operators along Alona Beach offer this as a day trip, but you generally need to book in advance.

Where to Stay in Bohol

There are so many options, with new places springing virtually up every month. There are hundreds of very cheap guest houses, ranging up to the exclusive Eskaya Resort which is a known destination for Hollywood movie stars. Here are our recommendations for the places we have stayed in.

Cheap Accommodation

Lost Horizon Dive Resort is right in the heart of Alona Beach. For absolute beachfront hotels in Panglao Bohol, this is the best you will find.

You will be treated to a relaxing live music in the beach front restaurant, and SCUBA diving available right there at the resort.

Mid Range

Right in the heart of central Tagbilaran City is the Metro Centre Hotel. This hotel was hit quite hard by the 7.3 earthquake in 2013 and is still undergoing redevelopment. It is in a great location, with the Bohol Quality shopping mall within walking distance.

Affordable Luxury

If you’re after the number 1 (affordable) Panglao Island beachfront resort, this is it. It is the Henann Resort Alona Beach, with its incredible white sand beach and unbeatable swimming pools. Henann occasionally offers some heavily discounted promotional offers. This hotel is Paradise with a capital P.

Bohol Attractions: Sikatuna’s Mirror of the World

0
bohol attractions sikatuna

Bohol Island is the 10th largest in the Philippines and is quickly becoming one of the premier tourist destinations. With its white sandy beaches and lush tropical jungles, there is lots to love about this tropical island paradise. One of the newest Bohol attractions is Sikatuna’s Mirror of the World and Botanical Garden. We check it out to see if it’s worth including into your Bohol trip.

Note: This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy for more information.

What is Sikatuna’s Mirror of the World?

This unique Bohol tourist destination opened in late 2018. It is a collection of famous statues and structures from around the world, faithfully reproduced in scaled down versions. This is a one of a kind when it comes to Bohol activities.

The park has been set up as a lovely botanical garden filled with palms, orchids and other tropical flora. All this in a beautiful setting of meandering pathways where you can soak up the beauty of the natural surroundings. There are lots of chairs scattered around the gardens to sit and enjoy the serenity.

Staged Development

Stage 1 opened in late 2018. When we visited in May 2019, stage 1 was still under construction but almost complete. The gardens were well established and the park was fully open for business. Here is a summary of what is planned for each stage.

Stage 1

  • Statue of Liberty
  • Singapore Merlion
  • Christ the Redeemer
  • Golden Gate Bridge
  • Eifel Tower

Stage 2

  • Dutch Windmill
  • Mt. Rushmore

Stage 3

  • Japanese Pagoda
  • European Castles

Stage 4

  • Big Ben
  • Petronas Towers
  • Dubai tallest building Burj Khalifa

Where is Sikatuna’s Mirror of the World?

Mirrors of the World is set in a lush tropical mountainous location roughly 17km inland from the capital city of Bohol, Tagbilaran City. It’s about 3km from the main road in Libjo, Sikatuna. Although out of town, it is close enough to the city to be considered one of the Tagbilaran tourist spots.

As of 2019 the access road was in the process of being concreted and was still 50% unpaved. That is to say, it’s still under construction. Relax, it’s easily accessible by family sedan style motor vehicles during normal weather. During monsoon rain, you would need to be careful on the narrow access road.

Cost of Sikatuna Mirror of the World

Entrance fees to Sikatuna Mirror of the World and Botanical Garden is as follows:

  • 150 Pesos Adults night time (6 pm to 9 pm)
  • 120 Pesos Adults daytime (7 am to 6 pm)
  • 100 Pesos Seniors day time
  • 50 Pesos Children below 3 feet tall

Opening Hours

The Sikatuna Mirror of the World opens at 7 am and closes at 9 pm. The park takes on a different character at night when the light show cranks up.

The light show is actually nothing fancy, but the main attractions of Christ the Redeemer, Singapore Merlion and Statue of Liberty do change color from white to red to blue. The biggest attraction at night may actually be escaping the oppressive daytime heat. Personally, I would prefer to visit at night for this reason.

Dining Out at Mirror of the World

At the entrance, you find the usual shops with cold drinks and snacks. The Mirror of the World is located out in the countryside, away from any township. Thus you will not find any shops or restaurants ‘down the road’ from the attraction.

bohol attractions sikatuna
Onsite restaurant

Inside there are 2 hills surrounding the botanical gardens, giving it a kind of amphitheater feel. Christ the Redeemer is on one hill, and the restaurant is on the other hill. The restaurant sells cold drinks, ice creams, and snacks. A better option is to have a sit-down restaurantstyle meal.

The menu is Filipino, and the prices are quite normal for restaurants around Bohol. That is to say, they don’t have the normal tourist inflation, and are still cheap by western standards.

How to Get There

The usual transportation for Tagbilaran is tricycle, where paying passengers can travel across town for around 50 pesos. Unfortunately, Mirror of the World is out of the normal range of a tricycle, thus you will need to find some other form of transportation.

Drive a Car

For anyone with access to a motor vehicle, this is the best way to get to this Bohol tourist destination. It’s about a 30-minute drive from downtown Tagbilaran City. The traffic is slow in this part of the world, where driving at 60 km/h is considered very fast.

bohol attractions sikatuna
The view from Christ the Redeemer

Hire a Motorcycle

If you don’t have access to a motor vehicle, your best bet is to hire a motorcycle or car of your own. The best way to do this is to ask at your hotel or accommodation reception, and they will surely be able to put you onto a ‘good friend’ who can hire some form of transport to you.

Motorcycles are cheap, local hotels and apartments usually hire them out for around 200 pesos per day. This is a great option in the warm tropical climate and one which makes it easy to add more Bohol activities of your choice.

Van with Driver

A tourist van with a driver is another popular form of transport in Bohol. It is not difficult to hire an 8-10 seater van complete with driver. This is a great way to go because they can drive you all over the island and take you to a variety of Bohol attractions. Or they can suggest an itinerary to you.

Prices vary greatly. I have personally hired these tourist vans for 2,000 pesos per day, but around 4,000 pesos per day is closer to the normal rate. Obviously, the more people you bring, the better the value.

Organised Tour

Many organized tours will be starting to take tourists into this attraction. Organized tours typically visit 4-8 tourist attractions to their Bohol tour itinerary, and this one deserves to be included. Just ask the operator when you book your Bohol travel and tours.

What to Bring?

Definitely bring some comfortable shoes. Whilst you don’t need to cover a lot of distance, there are quite a lot of stairs to climb.

Definitely bring a hat and sunscreen if visiting during the day. There’s not a lot of shade at the Mirrors of the World. This will improve over time as the new Botanical Garden matures.

Should You Visit the Mirrors of the World?

When it comes to things to do in Bohol, most visitors normally hit the beach or the lush forests. It’s a welcome addition to add something completely different to your Bohol trip.

If you were to make this the highlight of your day you will probably be disappointed. It’s not really a premier attraction which will complete your Bohol adventure. You only really need an hour to see the whole place and there’s not a lot in the way of creature comforts.

If you were to make this part of a bigger tour you will be pleasantly surprised. The Mirrors of the World is well laid out, nice to see, and different from anything else in Bohol. It’s in a lovely natural setting and it promises to get better as time goes on. It is worth checking out.

Open Top Bus

The open top on the double-decker bus gives awesome photo opportunities as you travel throughout Athens. There is no roof and no windows to interrupt your photos, and the bus is stopping and starting often in the traffic giving you nice steady photography opportunities.

The open top bus is also very refreshing, with the wind in your hair. It can get hot and sunny, so you really should come prepared with sunscreen and a hat.

It’s pretty cool to get free wifi on the bus as well.

Athens Bus Route

There are 15 stops on the Athens Bus Route. Here is what you will find at each one.

1: Syntagma Square

This is where the Athens sightseeing bus starts and finishes. Syntagma Square is the central square of Athens and a non-stop hive of activity. Here you will find an abundance of shopping, cafes, and restaurants. Syntagma Square is also flanked by the Old Royal Palace and Greek Parliament House for some outstanding sightseeing.

2: The 4 Museums

You could easily spend an entire day in this museum district, which includes the following:

  1. Athens War Museum
  2. Byzantine and Christian Museum
  3. Hellenic Children’s Museum
  4. Museum of Cycladic Art

You will also find the historic Aristotle’s Lyceum (Peripatetic School) at this stop. This site is famous for the Aristotle School of Philosophy. This was founded by Aristotle himself in 335 BC. There is also a temple dedicated to Zeus the wolf-god.

From this bus stop, you are a short walk from Lycabettus Hill, the highest point of Athens at 227m above sea level. You can catch a funicular (railway) to the top or take the strenuous but scenic walk.

There are also a lot of nice parklands in this area full of interesting historical sights. We recommend the cafe at the back of the Byzantine and Christian Museum for a break, with beautiful and historic parkland setting.

3: The National Gallery

Considered to be the most important art museum in Greece, this 1900 Art Gallery contains over 20,000 pieces of art. It is most famous for it’s European Art from 14th to 20th Century.

4: Ancient Olympic Stadium

This is a mustsee attraction in Athens. Panathenaic Stadium is the only white marble stadium in the world. In fact, it’s the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. It was built around 330 BC and is one of the main historic attractions in Athens. It is also where the first modern Olympic Games were held.

5: Melina Merkouri / Plaka

Plaka is an old historic area of Athens on the slopes of the Acropolis. Here you will find a maze of ancient streets and laneways, and a wonderful area to explore. Hidden treasures and scenic cafes abound.

6: Acropolis Museum

This wonderful museum opened in 2009 and contains many archaeological artifacts from the Acropolis. In 2019 the Trip Advisor People Awards voted the Acropolis Museum as the 6th Best Museum on the planet. Impressive, right?

7: The Acropolis and Parthenon

You can’t visit central Athens without “not seeing” the ancient Acropolis. This is the most prominent of all Athens ruins. It is perched right up on top of a hill, such that you can see the Acropolis from all over central Athens. But you really need to take the walk to the top to appreciate it properly.

The Parthenon is a must

The Acropolis is a World Heritage Site and was even a finalist for the New 7 Wonders of the World listings. This site is world famous and worthy of any bucket list. It is the one site that should not be missed when in Athens.

8: Temple of Zeus

We found this to be one of the more picturesque sites, and the place to go for some spectacular photos. The massive temple is in the center of Athens and was dedicated to the king of all Gods, Zeus.

The temple itself is 44m wide and 110m long and is surrounded by a series of giant columns. The building was completed in the 2nd century AD, over 600 years after the massive project began! 21 of the original 104 columns are still standing.

9: Parliament and National Gardens

These are large rambling gardens of 15.5 hectares (38 acres), which were once the royal gardens. In the National Gardens is the Old Parliament House and Zappeion. The Zappeion is a huge building which is mainly used for conferences and ceremonies, and not really a tourist attraction.

10: National Library

The National Library of Athens is almost 200 years old and is a wonderfully scenic building. This is a great place to photograph some grand Greek Architecture. As well as the National Library you also get to see the Academy of Athens and the University of Athens, 2 more magnificent and massive structures.

11: National Archaeological Museum

This is the largest archaeological museum in Greece and contains large collections of artifacts from different periods of Greek history from all over the country. It’s actually the richest collection of Greek artifacts in the entire world. In case you didn’t know it ancient Greece was a big deal in ancient world history.

hop on hop off bus athens

12: Omonia Square

This is not one of the major tourist spots on the route and is nothing more than an older town square in Athens. This is where you can see the other side of Athens – graffiti art and some of the more run downs streets. Hotels and cafes abound in this area, however, you need to be careful when visiting this area.

13: Karaiskaki Square

This central square is still in the bustling heart of Athens. Whilst the square itself is convenient with it’s own train station, it’s not a well known tourist attraction and there’s not a lot to see here.

14: Monastiraki Square

Monastiraki Square is a gathering place lined with amazing authentic Greek restaurants, and surrounded by a giant flea market. And it’s a stone throw from the best Athens Historic Sites, like Hadrian’s Library and Roman Agora.

Monastiraki Square at Night
Monastiraki Square

There are some outstanding rooftop restaurants and bars across the road from Monastiraki Square, such as A for Athens and the MS Roof Garden.

15: Kotzia Square

This is a smaller but very scenic square with an old fashioned feel. It is flanked by some impressive buildings, such as the City Hall and the National Bank of Greece. The square was built in 1874. Here you will also find some impressive archaeological diggings with a variety of ancient roads, tombs, and gates.

City Sightseeing Athens is a Winner

So the Hop On Hop Off Athens Sightseeing tour is an absolute winner in our opinion. We have shown you the impressive sights on just one of the routes. There are another 2 routes to choose from, as well as walking tours, boat cruises, and night tours.

We recommend you give this tour a try, you will not regret it. After spending 2 or 3 days taking these tours, you will really feel like you have seen Athens, and understand the history of this fascinating city.

Roof Garden Athens, Best Rooftop Restaurant in Athens

0
Athens ms roof garden

When it comes to rooftop restaurants in Athens, there are plenty to choose from. It is mandatory that they have uninterrupted views of the Acropolis and Parthenon. Throw in some breathtaking views of Lycabettus Hill, and the Parliament, and you have the MS Roof Garden Athens. Read on for an unbiased review.

Note: This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy for more information.

Where is the MS Roof Garden Restaurant?

The MS Roof Garden is located on the roof of the Plaka Hotel, right across the road from Monastiraki Square. The view from this bar is incredible, with uninterrupted views over Monastiraki Square, the old city of Plaka, and of course an amazing Acropolis view.

Getting to the MS Roof Garden is easy. By Metro Train just go to Monastiraki Station and exit at Monastiraki Square. From there cross the main road (Ermou) at the corner, and you are there! It’s on the corner of Ermou and Athinas Streets.

Garden View Rooftop Bar

The Restaurant has a great little bar, which is only open at night. Here you will find a fine selection of cocktails, wines, and beer. The terrace itself is open during the day, so visitors are welcome to enjoy the sunshine and the stunning views. And why not, this is famous for being one of the finest rooftop bars Athens has to offer.

Athens Rooftop Restaurants
Beautiful View from the Roof Garden

Rooftop Restaurant

This MS Roof Garden Restaurant has a New Mediterranean cuisine. I’m not sure exactly what that means, but I would call it a classy style of Greek Cuisine.

Prices are not exactly cheap, but in my opinion, it is still good value. Especially when you consider the unbeatable location and jaw-dropping views. A typical seafood main course will cost around €30 to €35. To put that in perspective, that is far cheaper than the A for Athens restaurant next door. The food is of a comparable standard, and the views are almost identical.

Click here to see the full menu.

Opening Hours

This restaurant is open most of the time. Breakfast is available from 6:30 am to 11:00 am. Curiously they close for 2 hours, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Then it’s open for lunch and dinner, right up until 1:15 am for the last order. Presumably, they will stay open until at least 2 am, but we never tested out this theory.

So if you’re looking for one of the coolest places to eat in Athens Greece, then MS Roof Garden has got you covered for breakfast, lunch or dinner. We thoroughly recommend the sunset at the Roof Garden, it’s the best and most popular time of day.

What We Love About the MS Roof Garden Athens

This is a classy restaurant and bar. The food is top class, the setting is amazing, the decor cozy yet classy. The staff are not snobby by any means. The waiter staff are cheerful yet diligent, casual yet chic, and all the while offering immaculate service. We loved these guys, they exemplify Greek hospitality.

Another thing we like about this restaurant is that it’s possible to have a walk up meal. That is, without a reservation. It is not uncommon to see a person on the street trying to lure passers-by into the restaurant.

No complaints about the food. Servings are big, such that we struggled to fit a full meal in. The taste was to die for, sumptuous modern mediterranean cuisine at its finest.

And the views are truly breathtaking. The good thing is that you don’t necessarily need front row position to get a great Acropolis view. We were second row back from the edge of the balcony and had amazing views over dinner, we did not feel left out.

Tip: if you do want to get the best views from the front row, simply phone ahead for a reservation on 21 0331 5190.

Overall Review

The MS Garden View Athens is the most enjoyable restaurant we experienced in Athens. The price was quite reasonable for such an amazing restaurant. It’s definitely one of the best places to eat in Athens Greece, and one which you should experience.

If you have an unlimited budget you may want to try the slightly classier A for Athens rooftop restaurant next door, but really there is very little between these two restaurants. And the views are near identical. Yep, the MS Roof Garden is undoubtedly one of the best rooftop restaurants Athens has to offer.

How to Make a New Bucket List

The cruise was indeed a life-changing experience, a truly majestic journey through a jaw-dropping location. Halong Bay is after all one of the most photogenic places on the planet, and one of the 7 natural wonders of the world.

Maybe you just want to chill out in your infinite pool at a classy Panglao Beach Resort. No Problem! Panglao Island ticks all the boxes. And here are some of our best things to do at Panglao Island.

Alona Beach: This is the most popular of all beaches in Panglao Island, and where most tourists end up at some stage. Alona Beach is a long white sandy beach, lined with cafes, resorts and SCUBA dive shops. And it’s a great place to take the kids for a safe swim.

SCUBA Diving: Balicasag Island is just a few minutes boat ride from Alona Beach. Balicasag is the best SCUBA diving Panglao Island has to offer. It is a marine sanctuary and full of huge turtles and diverse marine life. It is also quite shallow, with most dives around the 18m mark.

There are many other great dive sites all around Panglao Island, making it a SCUBA diving hotspot. There is also a great house reef, where you can do wall diving directly off Alona Beach.

Snorkelling Trip: You don’t need to be a SCUBA dive to enjoy the marine life at Panglao Island, the are countless opportunities to go snorkelling as well. Just ask you Panglao Island Resort to find you a boat, it’s very easy.

Alternatively just head to Alona beach, and ask any of the dozens of dive resorts what’s available. You will be able to book a boat, or get one virtually straight away if you want.

Hinagdanan Cave: Bohol and Panglao Island is full of caves, and Hinagdanan Cave on Panglao is open to the public. There is a large pool of water inside these caves where you are invited to have a swim. Amongst all the creepy crawlies also having a swim. It’s an easy spot to get to on your Panglao Island tour, just 20 minutes drive from Alona Beach.

Day Trips from Panglao Island

Panglao Island is connected to the much larger island of Bohol by 2 bridges, so a Bohol tour is quite easy to do. It’s quite easy to find a quality Bohol tour package at any of the tour outlets dotted along Alona Beach.

Bohol is full of some world class tourist attractions. It is also building a reputation for thrilling adventure parks for the thrill seekers. These days, Bohol is one of the premier tourist destinations in the Philippines, especially since the International Airport opened in November 2018.

Chocolate Hills:  The number 1 tourist attraction in the province of Bohol is the Chocolate Hills. When you ask a Filipino if they know about Bohol they will always say “ah yes, the Chocolate Hills”. Virtually every Bohol tour package will bring you here.

Think of hundreds of peculiar symmetrical mountains which turn brown in the dry season, resembling a giant box of chocolate. And a memorable day tour from Panglao Island.

Tarsier Conservatory: The smallest primate on the planet are native to Bohol. And you can see these curious creatures at the Tarsier Conservatory. Most day tours in Bohol will include some Tarsier visit on the itinerary.

Loboc River: About 1 hour drive from Alona Beach on Panglao Island is the Loboc River. This is the biggest river on the island of Bohol, and has lots of different river tour options available. One of the most interesting is firefly spotting at night.

Alona Beach is the number one attraction on Panglao Island, and the place where most people choose to stay. For first timers we recommend you stay as closer to Alona Beach as you can.

Shure MV88 review

The Shure MV88 is a smartphone external microphone designed to be used with iPhones via the lightning port. This microphone takes your iPhone video recording to the next level, by adding amazing audio. Here we review the Shure MV88, and test to see if it’s the best external microphone for iPhone.

What Is The Shure MV88 Microphone?

The Shure MOTIV MV88 is designed to plug straight into an iPhone, and has a built in male lightning connector. That means it’s compatible with iPhone 5 and later. The microphone is compact, lightweight and comes with a small carry case.

Let’s get one thing straight. This microphone sounds unbelievably great, straight out of the box. With this Digital Stereo Condenser Microphone, you can record as a stereo mic or as a cardioid mono microphone.

Who Should Buy a Shure MV88?

This is such a versatile microphone with professional audio quality. It is so good in fact that it has received wide acclaim for the ability to record live music at professional quality. This microphone would suit professionals and amateurs alike.

If you fall into any of the following groups, you should seriously consider getting your hands on a Shure MV88:

Why Do You Need an External Microphone for iPhone

iPhones take amazing video footage, but the audio is unfortunately not up to the same high quality. Due to the tiny built-in microphones in the iPhone, it is impossible to get professional sounding audio. That is unless you connect an external microphone.

The microphone on the iPhone XS and XS max are a huge improvement over previous iPhones. These newer phones come with 4 microphones to produce stereo sound. In fact, I find my iPhone XS max audio to be of usable quality for travel vlogs.

For the first time, this iPhone audio is ok to use for vlogging or YouTube clips. But the Shure MV88 is an outstanding quality external microphone, far superior to the iPhone microphones. The vast improvement over the naked iPhone is very noticeable on the finished video clip.

Wired versus Direct Microphones

I have been using a lapel microphone with my iPhone for a long time. I find the lapel microphone gives excellent results for travel vlogging. My preferred model is the Rode SmartLav+. This excellent lavalier mic for iPhone is conncted via a cable, and the other end connects to your shirt. The problem is you are then wired to the iPhone.

The Shure MV88 is what I would term a direct microphone. That is to say, it plugs directly into the iPhone without the need for wires. It is liberating to be not wired to your iPhone, and overall much easier to use.

ShurePlus Motiv App

The Shure microphone is paired with a Mobile Recording App you can download onto your iPhone called the ShurePlus Motiv App. On this app you can alter the recording pattern of the mic, and various other features.

Here are just some of the things this App can do:

  • Compatible with a range of Shure pro microphones, such as the MV88, MV51, MVi, and MVL.
  • Adjust stereo width, polar patterns, EQ and more
  • Trim and split tracks
  • Add fade to tracks
  • Real-time function adjustments to suit recording setting
  • File sharing via email, text, iTunes, Airdrop, and Dropbox

Do You Need To Use The App?

The thing I like about the Shure MV88 is that it is a true plug and play device. You can simply plug it in and record video using the iPhone camera app, or whatever other apps you are using to record video.

There is nothing to adjust and nothing technical to learn, because this microphone is compatible with IOS audio and video recording apps. Naturally it works seamlessly with the IOS Camera app. The downside is that you will miss out on all the functionality and adjustments available in the app. It just depends on how technical you want to be.

If you want to take your recording to the next level, there are more options for making adjustments in the ShurePlus Motiv App. For example, this would be useful for recording a live session with musicians, or podcasting.

Review of the Shure MV88 Microphone

Here are my thoughts on this great little microphone, after using it for a while with an iPhone XS Max.

Pros With The Shure MV88

Hard Case

The great thing about this microphone is the handy little egg-shaped hard case that it comes with. It is small enough to fit into your pocket or your camera bag. The case has a rugged build, and is solid enough to protect the microphone from bumps and scratches.

Wind Jammer

The microphone comes with a wind jammer. This is the small foam ball that fits snugly over the microphone to reduce wind noise. And it fits inside the case with the microphone to give you an all-inclusive kit.

Audio Quality

The audio quality is crazy good. I am not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination, but I know good audio when I hear it. The naked iPhone audio is reasonable, but the Shure MV88 audio is incredibly amazing.

I have around 6 external microphones in my collection including the Rode SmartLav+ and the Rode VideoMicro; the Shure MV88 is easily the best recording microphone in my collection to date. It is the easiest to use, the most compact, and with audio quality as good or better than other microphones.

Great for Tech Heads

With the companion app, this is a great microphone for tech heads and audiophiles. They can tweak all the different settings to optimize the recording. This may well be the best microphone app iPhone has to offer.

Plug and Play

At the other end of the spectrum to the tech heads are those who just want to plug the microphone in and start recording. No settings, no fuss. The good news is that this microphone will allow that level of simplicity. Just plug it in and start recording. And it can be fully set up in a matter of seconds.

Cons With the MV88

iPhone Case Removal

Because of the wide base design on the MV88, there is virtually no way you can run this device without removing your iPhone or iPad case. It does get a little bit annoying removing your case all the time to plug the microphone in. Note that you could use an extension wire to leave your iPhone case on, but I feel this takes away from the simple wireless design if the mic.

Microphone Rotation

Rotation is only 90 degrees. This is great for angling the microphone towards your subject whilst recording video. However, I would like the ability to quickly angle the microphone back towards myself to do a live voice-over.

Wind Jammer

As noted above, it’s great to have a windjammer included with the microphone. The only downside is that it is probably the dorkiest looking windjammer I’ve ever seen. Paired up with my iPhone XS Max, the sexiest looking smartphone on the market, the windjammer looks ridiculous. I think I prefer to leave it off to expose the sleek elegance of the microphone itself.

3.5mm Jack

It would be great if a 3.5mm jack was included for headphones line out. I believe this may be a big deal for recording musicians, and would be useful for monitoring the recording live. However, for a day-to-day user and a travel vlogger, this is not a big deal for me.

Is the Shure MV88 the Best Microphone for Vlogging?

These days, Vlogging is one of the main reasons people purchase microphones. I think there is a strong argument that this could be the best microphone for vlogging. Here’s why.

It is possible to spend a couple of thousand dollars on a Vlogging setup. That is if you want to go down the mirrorless camera and studio microphone route. But all you really need is an iPhone, a GorillaPod, an iPhone to Tripod adaptor, and a Shure MV88.

Apart from the iPhone, the full kit will only cost you only a couple of hundred dollars. With this smartphone external microphone, your audio and video quality will be pro quality. That makes the MV88 the best budget microphone for YouTube and overall the best microphone for vlogging.

What is the Shure MV88 Compatable With?

This microphone will fit any of these devices:

  • iPhone 5 and later
  • iPad 4th generation, Air, Air 2, Pro
  • iPad Mini, Mini 2, Mini 3
  • iPad Touch 5th generation

Should You Buy a Shure MV88?

If you are thinking of publishing an iPhone video onto YouTube, you sure need a Shure MV88. If you are thinking of recording live music, you need an MV88. If you are a Vlogger or Podcaster, this is a good option you should consider. And if you are a home video maker, this is the best thing since the iPhone XS.

I am fully converted to the Shure MV88, such that I wonder how I did without it for so long. This is a good quality microphone and the best smartphone microphone on the market. It’s not a cheap microphone at around $150, however, it is worth every cent. When you consider how precious your video footage is, the investment is well justified. The Shure MV88 is an excellent iPhone mic which I whole-heartedly recommend you invest in.
