In Day 12 of our epic family adventure we do some sightseeing around the historic city centre of Vienna, Austria. Today we get back on the Big Bus Tour and head to the city centre for some sight-seeing of the main landmarks. The entire city centre is listed as a Unesco World Heritage site so it’s bound to be a special tour.

Landmarks to See on Vienna Walking Tour

Using the Big Bus Tours guide map, we start visiting some of the landmarks on the map. These included:

  • Strauss Monument / Stadtpark
  • Mozart Haus
  • St.Stephen’s Cathedral / Stephansom
  • Graben
  • Albertina
  • Opera House

Albertina Gallery

The highlight of our day was entry into the Albertina Gallery. This is our third art gallery for the holiday, the first 2 were in London and Budapest. The Albertina is special because it has a large collection of Picasso paintings, as well as some Claude Monet paintings. These alone were well worth the visit. We also got to see a genuine Michelangelo painting.

Wandering through the Albertina we also discovered a section of the gallery dedicated to preserving some to the classic Viennese imperial style. These rooms were exquisitely decorated to royal standards. In fact royalty did live here for some time, 2 or 3 centuries ago. We stood in the room where the military chief died in years gone by. Unfortunately we were informed that no video photography is permitted in these sections.

Vienna City Central

The old city of Vienna is remarkably well-preserved and well worth visiting. Every corner we turned there was a new amazing sight to take in. The dining options were spectacular. The shopping experiences extraordinary. The old city centre of Vienna is spectacular in every way, and well worth visiting. All you need is a guide map to find the best landmarks.
